Hello! It’s been a busy summer for Columbine Hearing Care. We have all managed to sneak away for some special moments with our families and are happy to share pictures of these times with you all. I hope that your summer has been filled with sunshine, family and friends, good food and treasured memories.

See you in the office soon! 😍

💜 Dr. Dusty 💜

Dr. Dusty has had a summer of celebrations! She recently hosted a 50th (!) wedding anniversary celebration for her parents!! 🥂 She is pictured above with them while out on special trishaw ride to Hudson Gardens compliments of Cycling Without Age Littleton.

Dr. Dusty also celebrated her son Brody’s high school graduation! Congratulations, Brody!

Brenda was fortunate enough to enjoy quality time on a trip with each of her parents this summer. She and her dad traveled to Montana for some fishing and a friendly competition of who caught the largest fish!

Brenda and her mom took a road trip to Las Vegas for the Beatles “LOVE” Cirque de Soleil show. They stopped to take in the beauty of the Grand Canyon along the way!

Lisa and her daughter, Everly, traveled back to Lisa’s hometown in Wisconsin for a vacation to escape the Phoenix heat and spend time with her family. A highlight of the trip was an afternoon on the lake with her parents, siblings, nieces and nephews!

They also took in the Fourth of July fireworks over the lake, ate A LOT, took a tour of Lambeau Field (Go Pack Go!) and visited Madison.

Did You Know??

As with the many health conditions, hearing loss is not “one size fits all.” Audiologists diagnose whether hearing loss is present and, if it is, its TYPE and DEGREE. While you and your spouse (for example) may both have hearing loss, the results of your hearing evaluation may be vastly different! This is why there is also not a “one size fits all” approach to hearing aids; Dusty and Brenda determine a hearing loss treatment plan based on each individual and their specific hearing loss and needs.

TYPES OF HEARING LOSS

There are three types of hearing loss:

  • Sensorineural
  • Conductive
  • Mixed

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss and is the type generally associated with aging. When someone has a sensorineural hearing loss it is indicative of damage in the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent.

Conductive hearing loss is the result of an issue in the outer ear (pinna or ear canal) or middle ear (eardrum or middle ear space or three middle ear bones). For example: if your ear is completely blocked with earwax you will likely have a conductive hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is not necessarily permanent and medications or procedures can often improve one’s hearing.

Mixed hearing loss is when someone has both a sensorineural hearing loss AND a conductive hearing loss in the same ear.

A recent blog on the Columbine Hearing Care website discusses the different types of hearing loss in more detail and can be accessed HERE.

DEGREES OF HEARING LOSS

If hearing loss is present, a hearing care provider will describe it by not only it’s type (above) but also by its degree. The degrees of hearing loss are as follows:

  • Mild
  • Moderate
  • Moderately-Severe
  • Severe
  • Profound

The degree of hearing loss one has will correlate to the amount of difficulty one has hearing in everyday situations and will also assist the provider in selecting the most appropriate hearing aid technology.

The above information will be listed on the report from your hearing evaluation. Ask Dusty or Brenda if you have any questions!

Patient of the Month

Norma grew up in Chandler, OK where she was married and had 2 daughters. They moved to Climax and then Leadville, CO where her husband worked in the mining industry before settling in Denver, now with 4 daughters. She has 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and enjoys doing crossword puzzles. She wears hearing aids and recently got a new remote control from Columbine Hearing Care to make it easier to adjust the hearing aid volume despite neuropathy in her fingers. Ms. Norma turned 102 years young on July 18 and we’re helping her celebrate by making her our July Patient of the Month!

Happy Birthday to beautiful Norma!
